Will AI Replace Web Designers?
“Won’t AI put you out of a job?” Here’s my answer
I get asked this all the time. My answer is always the same: no. AI is brilliant at building websites. It’s not so good at building the right website.
Yes, AI is impressive
I’m not going to pretend otherwise. In a few minutes, an AI website builder can give you a layout, some copy and a design that looks the part. I use AI for some of the behind-the-scenes jobs, like editing images or pulling together supporting content, but every design and build is done by me.
But a website that looks good and a website that works are two very different things.
What AI doesn’t know about your business
AI doesn’t know why your customers choose you over the business down the road.
It doesn’t know what questions people ask before they pick up the phone. It doesn’t know what makes you different, or what your ideal client is worried about.
So it guesses. You end up with copy like “We are passionate about delivering high-quality solutions.” Every other AI-built site says exactly the same thing.
Generic doesn’t win enquiries. Specific does.
A pretty website isn’t the point. Enquiries are.
When I built a new site for AC8 Academy, the goal wasn’t just to make it look nice. It was to make it easy for parents to find out more and sign their kids up.
The result?
“Since Katie at Blossom Online built our new site, enquiries have gone through the roof.” Adam Clayton, Founder, AC8 Academy
That result didn’t come from a template. It came from knowing who was visiting the site and what they needed to do next.
Every website I build answers five questions:
- Who is it for? And what matters to them?
- What do you do? Is it clear in seconds?
- Why you? Is there real proof, or just claims?
- What next? Is it easy to call, book or enquire?
- Can people find you? On Google and in AI tools like ChatGPT?
AI can help with each of these. It can’t decide them for you.
“But isn’t AI cheaper?”
Sometimes, yes. If you’re testing an idea or just need a basic online presence, an AI builder can be a decent start.
But a cheap website that doesn’t bring in enquiries isn’t cheap. It’s wasted money. Plenty of businesses end up paying twice: once for the quick fix, then again to rebuild it properly.
So what’s my job now?
Exactly what it’s always been: understanding your business and turning it into a website that works.
I’ve spent over 20 years in digital marketing. AI makes me faster. Experience makes me useful.
A hammer doesn’t build a house. AI won’t build your business a website that wins customers. Not on its own.
I’m not competing with AI. I’m using it, and bringing everything it can’t.
