How Much Does a Small Business Website Actually Cost?
It's one of the first questions almost every client asks me — and it's a completely fair one. Before you commit to a new website, you want a sense of what you're actually looking at.
The honest answer is:
it depends. But “it depends” isn't very helpful on its own, so let's break down what it depends on, and give you a realistic sense of the range.
Why website costs vary so much
A website isn't one single product — it's really a combination of several things, and the cost shifts depending on which of these your project needs:
- How many pages your site needs, and how much content goes on each one
- Whether you need copywriting, or you're providing your own text
- If SEO and AI Search matter to you - some businesses need to rank well and be found by tools like Google and ChatGPT, others are happy relying on word of mouth or other marketing methods
- Branding - do you already have a logo and colour scheme, or does that need creating too?
- Whether you want a blog - a blog/insights area takes more planning and ongoing commitment than a standard page, so it's worth deciding upfront if it's part of your plans. Although a blog can easily be added at a later stage if required
- Ongoing support - some clients want to manage their website updates themselves, others prefer it to be done for them
A simple, clean website for a sole trader with five pages and their own content and branding ready to go looks very different, cost-wise, to a site that also needs new branding and identity creating, the strongest SEO foundations, a regularly updated blog and professional copywriting.
What I'd suggest instead of guessing
Because every project is genuinely different, I don't publish a single fixed price list — it wouldn't be accurate for most people who ask. What I do instead is have a proper conversation about what you actually need, what your budget is, and what matters most to you, then give you a clear, honest cost before any work begins. No surprises, no vague “final invoice will vary” clauses.
If cost is a concern (and for most small businesses and start-ups, it absolutely should be factored in carefully), tell me your budget upfront. I specialise in affordable websites for sole traders, start-ups and small businesses specifically because I know digital agency prices can be genuinely prohibitive for a new or growing business — and there's rarely any need for that.

A few things that can keep costs down
- Have your content ready. The more of your own text, images, and branding you can provide, the less time (and cost) goes into creating it from scratch
- Be clear on your must-haves versus nice-to-haves. A phased approach — launching with the essentials and adding extras later — is often more affordable than trying to build everything at once
- Ask about the free domain and hosting perks. As part of my hosting packages, your domain name is usually free for the first year — a small saving that adds up.
